Datuk Dr. S. Sivagurunathan - Up-close & Personal
Datuk Dr. S. Sivagurunathan graduated from the University of Punjab Lahore in 1969. He then joined the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) for 3 years, servicing the livestock and small animal industry. During the first year of his service, Datuk Dr. Siva instituted the first therapy protocol for "Krian Sore" (ie: foot rot in cattle), an economically devastating disease for cattle at that time.s
He was one of the early pioneering veterinarians who successfully established the first modern veterinary practice in Kuala Lumpur in 1972. He partook in continuing education with the Critical Care Society and AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) and published over 30 scientific papers over the next 15 years. His special interests include orthopaedic surgery and critical care management.
In 1978 he ventured into importing the first brand of wellness and prescription pet nutrition into Malaysia's leading pet care company. By 1985, he had transformed his single practice to a multi-vet group of hospitals. In 1990, Animal Medical Centre was appointed as the first private training institute for veterinary graduates from University Putra Malaysia (UPM).
Datuk Dr. S. Sivagurunathan was then appointed as an Adjunct Professor of UPM, lecturing in the field of animal welfare, ethics and practice management. In 1996 he was the chairman of the Animal Welfare Committee of Federation of Asian Veterinary Association. He was the Past President of the Small Animal Practitioners Association of Malaysia and Past President of the Veterinary Association of Malaysia (VAM ). Datuk Dr. Siva also holds the Deputy Chairman title in the Malaysian National Animal Welfare Foundation (MNAWF). Datuk Dr. S. Sivagurunathan was one of the founding members of VetOne of USA formed in 1998, an organization represented by key innovators in veterinary medicine around the world.
